DECOLONIZATION FOR OUR TIME: ISRAEL/PALESTINE IN THE 21ST CENTURY

Ilan Pappé

RECORDING AVAILABLE HERE

Historian, social activist, and Israeli iconoclast Ilan Pappé was born six years after Israel’s 1948 “war of independence,” during which at least 700,000 Palestinians were expelled from their homes and an unknown number lost their lives. Professor Ilan Pappé contends that those expulsions were a planned and systematic attempt to remove an entire people from a region. Professor Pappé bases his book The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine (2006) on British and Israeli documents released in the 1980s. He further contends that the absence of peace in the Middle East today is a direct result of the creation of Israel, and argues for international economic, political, and academic boycotts of Israel. He also supports the concept of one united state for Palestinians and Israelis.

Join us as Ilan Pappé reviews the historical evidence for his views on the creation of Israel and provides both context and remedies for today’s situation.

About Ilan Pappé:  After being condemned by the Knesset in 2007 and asked to resign his position as lecturer at the University of Haifa, Dr. Pappé left for the United Kingdom. He is now a Professor in the College of Social Sciences in International Studies at the University of Exeter. He continues to write, speak, and teach.
