Youth Dreams Deferred: Lebanon’s Youth Demand Change
Christina Andeweg
10:00am CT presentation & discussion
Online, via Zoom – REGISTER HERE (registration notes are at the bottom of this page)
Lebanon rang in 2020 with fireworks and the clanging of spoons on pots, the sounds of people protesting the Lebanese government over corruption and mismanagement. Led by youth, the spirit of the uprising has been diverse and inclusive, reaching across different groups. Only a few months later, the effects of a global pandemic continue to threaten the already fragile economic and political environment in Lebanon. The country’s youth, however, refuse to give up, and continue to play a role in creating positive change in their communities despite the many barriers they face.
Join Christina Andeweg, Donor Relations Coordinator at Anera, in discussing the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Lebanon, its effects on Palestinian, Syrian, and Lebanese youth, and how organizations like Anera are responding to the ever-changing needs on the ground, working to offer young people hope for a better future.
Anera, which has no political or religious affiliation, works on the ground with partners in Palestine (West Bank and Gaza), Lebanon and Jordan to mobilize resources for immediate emergency relief and for sustainable, long-term health, education, and economic development. Anera staff serves in local communities, navigating the politics that constrict progress to get help where it’s needed most.
Bio:
A graduate of St. Olaf College, Christina Andeweg is always eager to return to the Midwest and its less aggressive ways of being. After spending a year of accompaniment in Beit Sahour, Palestine with the ELCA’s Young Adults in Global Mission (YAGM) program, Christina joined the fundraising team at Anera. In her three years at Anera, Christina has done everything from leading the fundraising team in implementing a new donor database, to coordinating Anera’s relationships with faith-based organizations. Throughout all she does, Christina is committed to working towards a more just and peaceful Middle East through positive investment in communities affected by unjust power structures.
